A lot of people ask, “what’s the difference between an acrylic and glass teleprompter mirror?” I’m going to show you what they look like side-by-side, and explain the differences between them. Teleprompters fall into two categories: delivering speeches and recording videos.
Delivering speeches is where the acrylic mirror shines. Its low weight combined with high strength makes it perfect to prevent tipping and accidental damage in a teleprompter.
Teleprompter operators love the acrylic option because:
“A” – It means fewer broken mirrors. Breaking a teleprompter on the eve of the event happens all the time.
“B” – Acrylic doesn’t break when carrying it around. Imagine one’s surprise on the road to find out your teleprompter is intact, but your mirror is shattered into a million pieces.
“C” – The light weight means tipping is no longer a problem. Remember when Obama’s teleprompter kept breaking? It made national news numerous times.
In summary, a teleprompter is all about keeping a speech smooth and effortless. Breaking glass isn’t the kind of impact you want to be making with a teleprompter. Many teleprompter professionals order acrylic mirrors in sets to have them as spares, in case their primary glass breaks.
But what if you’re primarily using a teleprompter for recording videos? That’s when you’ll want a very transparent mirror. To record through a mirror, our dielectric beam splitter coatings are very popular due to their high transparency. More about this in our other videos.
Pro tips time! Now I’m going to run through the most common questions we get about acrylic teleprompters:
What options are available? Most people really like the rounded corners option so that the mirror looks very professional and doesn’t “snag” on people. Remember, you’ll be recording the mirror as a major prop of a speech, so aesthetics are important.
What sizes are popular? Usually, acrylic teleprompter mirrors are going at the top of a presidential teleprompter, so the common orientation is slightly taller than wide. Here’s how they slip into the top of a teleprompter [illustrate the proper orientation and placement within the clip] A typical size is 12″x14″ or larger.
How are they cleaned? Just use lens cleaner and microfiber wipes.
How are they transported? A poly bag and bubble wrap is normally used, a lot of people simply retain the original packaging to make transportation easy.
What about extremely bright outdoor environments? We offer a completely opaque acrylic mirror for outdoor teleprompting called a first surface mirror. It’s ideal when there’s a very bright setting with light colored background, such as white buildings. We offer a special page for ordering an acrylic first surface mirror.

Eliminate “Ghosting”
Ghosting, also known as a double image, makes it difficult to read text off an ordinary mirror or two way mirror. By installing a teleprompter mirror with mirror side closer to the talent, it’s in the correct orientation. The non-mirror side, which has an anti-reflective coating, will face the camera or audience. To find the mirror side, place your finger up to the glass. If there is no gap between your finger and its reflection, that is the mirror side.
